Moody Gardens - May 24-26, 2014

Moody GardensOnce again, we had a full marina at Moody Gardens for our Memorial Weekend Cruise.  Some boats arrived on Friday, whether heading straight for an additional night in the marina, or taking advantage of the great breeze and anchoring out for the night in Offatts Bayou.

By mid-afternoon, most boats had arrived, so we got the party started with Bahama Mamas on the dock.  Now, I know that tradition says the chef is supposed to sample his own cooking before serving, but it appears that Moray may have over-sampled, if the strength of the last batch of rum cocktail was anything to go by!!!  It was great to see so many people there, some arriving by land yacht, and others who were spending the weekend anchored at Offatts Bayou.

After the cocktails, we were transported by the Moody Gardens shuttles to Fisherman’s Wharf.  There, 43 TMCAers, including the club’s newest member, Nick, enjoyed a delicious meal, followed by drinks on the balcony, overlooking the Elissa.  Jerry very kindly gave a great presentation on the history of this beautiful boat, informing us of how she got to be here, the work that is being done to restore her, and how she works.  Thanks again, Jerry!

The shuttles were right on schedule to bring us back to Moody Gardens, to round off a great day.

Sunday started with a potluck breakfast on the dock.  Then most people headed up to enjoy the pool, beach or 3D movies at Moody Gardens.  The potluck dinner was great, with several people joining us from the anchored boats, some who dinghied over from Pelican Rest and a few who drove down to join in the fun.  It was a great evening.

Lots of people need to be thanked.  First of all, thanks to everyone who brought food to the potluck breakfast and dinner.  We had everything from devilled eggs to poached salmon, so we ate in style!  Thanks to all who give us words of wisdom regarding the organization of the weekend.  This was our first time leading a cruise and their advice was invaluable.  Thanks to Jerry Simoneaux for his impromptu presentation about the Elissa.  And welcome to Nick, who joined TMCA this weekend after meeting us on Saturday morning!
