  UPDATE: Because of weather, this cruise has been postponed AGAIN.  It is now from Feb 6 - Feb 8 .  

  This is a cruise to the Smith Point area to explore the approaches to Spoonbill RV Park by dinghy with a depth sounder in an effort determine the feasibility of having an official cruise there later in the year. The current thought is that it is too shallow to allow our boats in anymore but we're going to go find out.

  While there are no specific activities planned other than the exploration, there is a high likelihood of boat to boat visiting via dinghies and cockpit cocktails while anchoring out with a great view across the water of a spectacular sunset. Do bring warm clothes. It could be chilly.

  
  There is also a boat ramp if you'd like to join in on the fun but don't want to spend the night at anchor.

  The Barn Bash for 2026 will be held on February 6th from 7:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. at the Aquarius Float Barn 1517 31st.

  Tickets are $30, available at the door. Cash only!

  The Barn Bash is Galveston’s biggest Mardi Gras party, and it’s happening the evening before the Seawall Parade! This event is open to the public (21 years or older) and features live entertainment, beverages, dancing, face painting, and throws. Local food trucks will be on site for snacks and dinner. 

  Admission for the event is $30, cash. Your admission price includes  your choice of beer, wine, or soft drinks.  NOTE: TABC rules only allow serving an individual 2 drinks at a time.

  What to Expect at the Barn Bash

  The Barn Bash is held at the Aquarius Float Barn 1517 31st Street, a 20,000-square-foot warehouse where many of the Mardi Gras floats are stored. This gives you a unique opportunity to see the floats up close before the big parade.

  In addition to the floats, the Barn Bash also features a live band, food trucks on site, beer, and wine. There’s plenty of room to dance and party, and you’re sure to have a blast. Bring a chair if you want to sit down.

  The highlight of the event starts at 9:00 p.m., when the Krewe members board their floats to throw beads to the crowd.  The challenge is to see who can catch the most and fanciest beads.

  Have a Great Time at the Barn Bash!

  Please register for the cruise if interested in attending by either land yacht or boat. There are 2 choices, one with a slip request and one not. Then make your dinner selection.   The Houston Yacht Club is hosting a Valentine's Day-themed dinner beginning at 6:00 on Friday night, and TMCA is invited to attend. You can arrive by boat or come by car. When you arrive, go to the front desk to pick up a Guest card.  This card will be used by the staff at the bar and at dinner. Make your dinner selection/s when registering.
  

  
  

  You can also have dinner at the Yacht Club on Saturday night. You will just need to show up, request a table, and pay separately.

  If you decide to arrive by boat, make sure your profile is updated with correct and complete boat information. If you wish, you can stay both Friday and Saturday nights.

  WOW is an introductory/refresher boating class for TMCA women members, taught by TMCA women members.  You will learn basic rules of the road, navigation, radio communication, knot tying, docking and so much more!  The women instructors are veteran boaters happy to answer your questions and share their experiences.  You will have the opportunity to polish your skills or learn something new.  This is a fun, laid back class with lots of hands on instruction and social interaction.

  There is no fee for this class and you are not required to order food or beverages. However, the Elks Lodge will have beverages for purchase and you may pre-order lunch (Salad w/ Chicken or Hamburger w/ Fries)  during registration.

  You will receive a hard copy of the WOW documents at the start of class.

  Winter Cruising is the BEST!  
  

  Join us for a multi-day cruise to see the Whooping Cranes as we cruise past the beautiful Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.  Flexible travel with stops in Surfside, Matagorda, Port O’Connor, Rockport and Port Aransas.  Walk to the beach at Surfside, enjoy dinner out at each over night stop, visit with others during the trip making new friendships or just getting to know each other better.

  Each cruiser will make their own marina reservations.  Sailboats travel slower than motor vessels. Travel at your own comfortable speed. ( For example, M/Vs might skip Port O’Connor and head straight through to Rockport/Port Aransas.)

  Great Learning Opportunity

  This cruise offers first timers a buddy boat, waypoints, the experience of how to transit the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Flood Gates and the opportunity to communicate with commercial traffic.

  But, But, But…. Weather and Locks….

  If you have a cockpit enclosure or cabin steering with a seat, you will be fine.  If you enjoy winter sports, this is the cruise for you!   Currently (1/13/25), both locks and flood gates are open and operating normally.  If the water speed reaches 5-7 mph, the Locks close over night.  Anything 7 miles and up, the locks are closed to all.   We will be closely monitoring these.  

  Safety and not destination will be our goal.  Offshore cruising, bypassing both flood gates and locks, is a wonderful experience if the waves, wind and weather are good.  The trip will be flexible and fun.  The cruise leaders have made the trip numerous times.

Bring all your own everything...food, beverages, picnic blankets or chairs, sunscreen, hats, lines for tying up and anything else to enjoy the day. If you don't have or don't want to dinghy up the creek, please meet us at the park!  If you don't have a dinghy, but would like to ride in one, please reach out!   We will be taking the left fork to Job Beason Marina, not the right one that goes to Double Bayou, and slips are $25 a night, paid upon registration. We will be assigning slips soon. (If you've already signed up, you'll receive instructions soon on how to make your $25.00/night payment.) As soon as you get settled, meet up at the Frascone Winery for a wine-tasting! While they won't run us off, the official closing time is 6 p.m. There's a place called Hurricane Tita's if you want to eat dinner there, or you can cook on your boat.

  On Saturday at 4:00PM, come down to the Fish Fry at the Marker 17 restaurant, which is situated right at the fork. Come sporting your St. Patty's day attire for your chance to win a "valuable prize". On Saturday evening make sure to bring a roll of quarters to play, "Screw Your Neighbor"! This year our official TMCA "Screw Your Neighbor" referee will be Sir Charles Parette. Sunday morning, Marker 17 will make us a nice breakfast for the price of a donation! They are hoping for a $10:00pp donation. Don’t forget that you can come by car and rent a room at the hotel next to the marina for $130.00 per night.

  Note from the Cruise Leader,

  Last year we went back to the pasture with a couple boats drawing more than 5 feet with the thought of using the success of that cruise to promote a return to the French Picnic and here we are again. The return to the Pasture Cruise as well as last years French Picnic was a great success and the only boat that got stuck even for a few minutes was me when I mistook the wreckage of Marker 11 for the totally missing marker 12, navigational error by me. The tidal situation this year is very close to optimal near in terms of height and times. The weather should be great and with a likely south wind there will almost surely be plenty of water up there.

  Bottles, and playing cards will be spread out amongst HOST BOATS in Watergate Marina and Waterford Marina by 6:30pm, we will supply a map with locations of host boats to walk to for the poker cards, and information about the wines. 

  Informal tastings will be done at each boat!

  Information about wines will be on your MAP so just taste and enjoy the light reading material.***

  You will not be permitted to do the tasting if you do not have a wristband.

  MARK off each boat you visit and grab your poker card.

  Afterwards, meet up at Waterford Pavillion B, turn In cards at 8:00pm once all poker cards are collected to announce winners, AND finish all the wines!

  Get ready to spice things up! For 2026, we are trying something a little different and a lot of fun. We’re heading to the iconic Texas City Dike for a festive Cinco de Mayo celebration on the water and on the beach.

  The Experience

  This cruise is all about the "anchor-out" lifestyle. We will be dropping hooks in the protected waters north of the Dike, creating our own TMCA raft-up community. Once the anchors are set, grab your dinghy, paddleboard, or kayak—we’re heading to the beach!

  The Dike is known for its vibrant atmosphere, and for Cinco de Mayo, the energy will be infectious. We’re hoping to soak up some local Tejano music and join the shoreline festivities. And if the beach party doesn't find us, don’t worry—we’re bringing the party with us! Whether it’s sharing tacos on the sand or enjoying a sundowner from the cockpit, this is going to be a weekend to remember.

  Are you looking to level up your cruising skills? Whether you’ve been dreaming of your first offshore passage or want to master the art of navigating the ICW alongside the "big dogs" (the barges!), this is the cruise for you.

  Freeport is the perfect "Goldilocks" destination—far enough to provide a rewarding challenge, but close enough to reach in a single day. This trip is specifically designed to help you build confidence in a supportive, fleet-oriented environment.

  The Destination: Where We’ll Dock

  We are looking at two primary options for our stay, both offering great amenities for a relaxing weekend:

  • Freeport Marina: Located securely behind the "guillotine" storm gate on the Brazos River, this marina offers sturdy floating docks and a very peaceful environment. It’s a short distance from local landmarks like On The River Restaurant (a Freeport staple for over 30 years) and Outriggers Bar & Grill, which offers great river views and live music.

  • Surfside Marina: This is a state-of-the-art, deepwater facility located right on the Intracoastal and just minutes from the open Gulf. While it doesn't have an on-site pool, it is famous for its exceptional service—expect staff to be on the docks waiting to catch your lines as we arrive. It features a well-stocked ship’s store and some of the cleanest, most comfortable air-conditioned restrooms and showers on the coast. For dining, you are just a short walk from local gems like Dorado’s Seafood & Coastal Grill or the legendary Red Snapper Inn.
    

  The Plan

  We’ll depart on Thursday or Friday, giving everyone flexibility. Once we arrive, we’ll spend a day or two resting up, swapping stories, and perhaps even organizing a beach excursion to Surfside. We will head back on Sunday, returning home with new skills and great memories.

  A Rewarding Experience

  My wife and I completed this trip in 2025, and it was one of our most rewarding experiences on the water. I’m eager to share that sense of accomplishment with you! If you’ve ever felt hesitant about "going out there" or managing the traffic of the ICW, I’ll be there to answer questions and alleviate any concerns.

  I am looking for a Volunteer Cruise Leader to help coordinate marina slips and a group activity. Don’t worry if you’ve never led before—as your Cruise Captain, I’ll be right there to support you. It’s a low-stress way to give back to the club and help make this adventure happen.

  This is a cruise designed for us to watch some of the Texas Outlaw Challenge mariners arrive at Bayland Marina on Saturday morning as one of the stops on their “Gunslinger Poker Run” event (re: https://texasoutlawchallenge.com/), there to pick up their poker card, to perhaps fuel up their thirsty gas-guzzling beasts, and then to grab lunch and a brewski or two at O’Neal’s. This cruise was first run back in 2012 (when O’Neal’s didn’t even exist!), and a photo album from that cruise can be seen on my Flickr site by clicking here. Since there is no swimming pool at Bayland, like there is at Harborwalk which is another one of the stops, the boats don’t linger at Bayland for very long, but it is great fun to watch it all while it lasts!

  The “Goose Creek Dinghy Excursion” part of the day was a cruise feature which I created back in 2001 when there just wasn’t much to do there at Bayland on hot summer afternoons! I led that fun event every year for the next several, and there was always great participation! So bring those dinghies and we will spend a couple of hours in the afternoon cruising up this close-by waterway that bisects the city of Baytown.

  O’Neal’s Sportsbar & Grill (click here) opened in June 2018. The food is good, the beer is cold, there is often live music, and the view of passing ships in the HSC, and especially of the Fred Hartman Bridge, cannot be beat, especially at sunset and after dark! It had been a long time since Bayland Marina had a venue onsite such as O’Neal’s, where one could go for dinner, and/or just some cold beers at the bar out under the palapa, and so I am looking forward to it again!

  TMCA has a very long history of cruising to Bayland Marina (https://baylandmarina.com/bayland/), and that is ever since it first opened in the mid-90s! It is a fine weekend destination due to its relatively short distance from Clear Lake (10.5nm), and with its great docks, plenty of electric plug-ins, clean restrooms, and ship’s store, it is well worth cruising to! The long-awaited dredging of the entrance channel took place a couple of years ago, and looking at the tide predictions for the weekend no one should have any access problems. If you cannot make the trip on Friday just come on Saturday, but the go-fast boats generally arrive around mid-to-late morning, and so if you want to see them you need to arrive early!!

Slip fees for TMCA at Bayland are $1.50/ft per night, payable at the ship’s store. There are always plenty of open slips and so you really do not need to make a separate reservation with the marina.

  We will be enjoying one night on the hook over at Houston Yacht Club's protected anchorage deemed "Wussy Bay"

  Great little anchorage with easy proximity to a small "shell beach" area where we could all assemble to meet others who decide to drive over for this event. We will bring over our boat grill and can do hot dogs on the beach, fly a kite, blare some music, and let loose on some floats!

  The Pirate Cruise to Red Fish Island is having a change of venue. Winds are out of the South and Southwest this weekend making Redfish far from an ideal place to anchor. Wussy Bay, just north of Houston Yacht Club is well protected in those wind directions. There is a beach so we can still have dinner there but we will not have the bonfire so change your food plans accordingly.

  As is always the case with pirates there will looting and no burning this time!!

  The plan is to have a bonfire on the beach and it would be good if you could bring some scrap wood or fire wood along. You can go ashore and scavenge for wood as there usually is a fair amount washed up on the island.

  Pirate clothing of any kind is encouraged. We will all vote to pick the winner on the beach.

  The fun starts in the afternoon. Place the wood you have on the bow where it is reachable from the water. Tie a few strips of cloth around the bow as marks of your vessel. Then get aboard your dingy, armed with your water weapons. Approach the other pirate boats and try to take the wood and "vessel marks" from them. They will try to fend you off with their water weapons so you will have to dissuade them with yours. It promises to be a great afternoon!

  
  

  In the evening we will have a bonfire on the island and a shared meal. Bring beverages and a dish to share.

  I've been told water balloons are not allowed because turtles eat them and die. So, no water balloons.

  Pirates, Some clarification on the flags and wood situation for others to “steal/raid” from your bow. What I used last year was cut up t-shirts with my boat name on them attached with clothes pins to my pulpit and lifelines. Casey and David had both wood on the bow and some cloth strips tied to their pulpit and stanchions. Kevin had engineering tape streamers on his aft deck because the pulpit is very high on his boat. There really are very few rules. Last year we had 3 boats for the pirate games and this year we have 12 registered and I’ve been told 2 more may join. I think this is going to be a lot of fun. Criteria to win the game. Last year Kevin won because he was the only one to steal stuff from more than one other boat. I like that criteria so we’re using it again. He or she who steals stuff from the most boats wins a valuable prize and possible collectors item but don’t get too excited about that because it’s mostly about bragging rights. Multiple items from one boat won’t count as multiple items unless you have something from every other boat out there. This should keep the unscrupulous among you from taking everything at once off a near defenseless single hander. The game will run from 2:00 to 4:00 and I'll confirm that with a radio call on channel 68. The other game is a Pirate Costume contest on the beach and we will all vote to select a winner from those who wish to compete. Pirates after all were an early and mostly democratic society. About the food for the shared dinner. Last year it was mostly finger foods and it was fine. We had pinwheels, cookies, Caprese salad sticks and a big bowl of cut fruit. I’ll have a small table or 2 but we may need another one. My point here is it doesn’t have to big or fancy, with 12 boats there should be sufficient variety and abundance for everyone to get something to eat. There will be a fire on the beach so s’mores and hot dogs, AKA scurvy dogs for purposes of this cruise, and other fire grilled fare are possibilities. I will bring some skewers but if you have some it wouldn’t hurt to bring your own. I will also have paper plates, bowls, knives, forks and spoons and a big roll of paper towels. If you need something else, please bring it. Dinner will start around 6:00 on the island. I’m watching the weather and am a little concerned with the predicted wind direction but the speeds are fine and as of now it’s still a go. I’ll send updates if that changes for the worse.   Join us Oct 23 - 25 for all or any portion of a cruise up Cedar Bayou. It’s an easy

  navigation as posted on the TMCA website and following Philip's great navigation instructions. We anchor in a very protected channel, with an easy 6+ foot entrance at the channel. This is a casual Cruise, so bring your dingy to explore. 

  As a reminder, since a barge company took over the Finger Lakes, we now anchor upstream in the 'cooling channel', which is upstream of the old height restrictions so both sail or power can join this cruise.

  There are limited places to take dogs ashore, but it has been done.

  This is a great chance to practice anchoring in a protected anchorage.  If you forget to register, no worries, come anyway. I plan to head over on Friday March 8, but others will likely come Saturday.

  Rafting up to Petite Fleur is OK, will break up raft at night.

  Will demonstrate soft shackle knot making if interested. Bring your own cord

  (recommend Dyneema ¼” - or similar chord, at least 5 feet.)

  Register on the TMCA site with complete boat information and note if you plan to come for both nights or just Saturday. Registration will close Thursday, Nov 6 so that we can provide information to the marina for slip assignments. We will provide your slip assignment by email with a diagram of the marina on Wednesday, Nov. 12 Our discounted rate for the weekend is $1.25 ft.

  You will need to check in at the office to pay when you arrive.

  Please fly your TMCA burgee and call on channel 68 when approaching the marina. Bring your folding chairs.

  It is a short drive over the bridge, so you can come by land yacht, if not by boat. (Please let me know if you plan to come so I can bring enough bowls & utensils, etc.) Call me ahead of time for the gate code.
